The structure of the skin

Epidermis, dermis and subcutis
Basically, the skin is structured in layers: from the outside to the inside, it comprises individual layers of skin - these are in particular the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fatty tissue.

The epidermis

The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin and represents the human's actual protective covering from the outside. It is made up of several interlocking layers and consists of several layers of constantly renewing horny cells. The thickness of the epidermis is between 30 micrometers and 4 millimeters depending on the region of the body - it is thickest on the sole of the foot and the palm of the hand.

The leather skin (dermis)

The dermis is closely interlocked with the overlying epidermis through peg-shaped connections. As a well-supplied connective tissue with lymphatics and nerves, it is responsible for supplying the epidermis with nutrients and oxygen. The sebaceous glands, hair roots and sweat glands are also located here. These are located in the lower part of the dermis and in the transition layer to the subcutaneous layer.

The subcutaneous fatty tissue (subcutis)

The dermis is a layer of fat cells and loose connective tissue.

Structure of the lip skin

Thin layer of skin cells: Stratum Corneum

Properties of lip skin

The lips are part of the outer mucous membranes and have no sebaceous glands, and therefore no protective hydrolipid film of their own - a protective layer made of sweat and sebum. It ensures that the lips cannot supply themselves with fat. If low humidity or wind and cold put additional strain on the lips, moisture loss occurs.

The result: the lips are dry, irritated and chapped. In order to find relief, we supposedly think we have to moisten with our tongue. However , this only helps to a limited extent , because evaporation removes even more moisture from the lips and the effect is intensified.

Lip skin vs. facial skin

Same, same but different.

Compared to the skin on the rest of the body, the skin of the lips only has a very thin layer of dead skin cells (stratum corneum). The dead skin cells protect the skin from external influences. This thin protective layer makes the lips extremely vulnerable. In addition, the dead skin cells in the lip are not as able to fulfill their protective function. So it's no wonder that the lip area quickly loses moisture and is very sensitive - comparable to the skin on the cheeks. And the older you get, the bigger the difference becomes.

With organic hemp seed oil for beautiful and nourished lips

By applying lip care, the skin loses less moisture and prevents extreme drying out. The most important thing is to use a product that binds moisture in the skin and protects and cares for it from external weather influences.
